ABOUT US

After 40 years of rapid industrialization, Penang is well positioned to become an equal partner in the world of high technology.

The existing multinational companies have already initiated aggressive plans to move local activities up the value chain by including their company’s value added continual value innovation activities into their local portfolios.

These actions will drive local industries to keep pace, resulting in severe, but welcomed, challenges to the quality of our human resources, now and in the future.

The Penang Science Cluster Bhd (PSC) is set up to respond to this challenge.

Our vision is to help inspire great interest in science and technology, that will result in an environment that generates great passion for excellence through technical innovations.

The PSC is an industry-led initiative in collaboration with the State Government to help lay the foundation to realize this vision.

Six Foundation Pillars

To be effective, the Penang Science Cluster is made up of industry captains, entrepreneurs, experienced professionals and technically talented teachers. We are very fortunate that these individuals have volunteered their valuable time to help Penang to harness this aggressive growth opportunity.

This team has identified 6 pillars to be developed and become the core foundations that will fuel the necessary passion to innovate and excel in the high value technologically driven industry.

Sustainable Learning and Education

To generate great interest in science and technology, especially amongst the young through inquiry-based, hands-on workshops, holding science competitions, and holding scientific exhibitions in Penang.

Led by Dato’ TT Yew, Managing Director, Motorola Solutions Malaysia.

Life Sciences & Medical Health

To cultivate interest in the field of life sciences, by leveraging on existing biotechnology companies to showcase the application of the interesting and rewarding applications resulting from innovations from the physical, chemical and biological sciences.

This initiative is focused around creating an experiential awareness, especially among students, about how they can also contribute to these “sunrise” industries in Penang.

Led by Mdm Yenni Lim, Senior VP, Operations/Supply Chain Asia Pacific, B Braun Medical Industries.

Mentoring Young Scientific Entrepreneurs

To cultivate interest in the field of life sciences, by leveraging on existing biotechnology companies to showcase the application of the interesting and rewarding applications resulting from innovations from the physical, chemical and biological sciences.

This initiative is focused around creating an experiential awareness, especially among students, about how they can also contribute to these “sunrise” industries in Penang.

Led by Mr Choo Wai Heng, , DreamCatcher Consulting Sdn. Bhd.

Cultivating Innovation and Research

To cultivate passion in technology and research in the local community and industry, by organizing high energy innovation events and conferences that will be designed around sharing of ideas and achievements in an environment of friendly competition and learning.

The two-fold objective is to inspire a new generation of local technology entrepreneurs to take action and create a technically talented workforce that will satisfy the human resource demands of a high technology industry.

Co- Led by Mr Robin Martin Managing Director, Intel Technologies Malaysia and Mr Chan Kee Siak, CEO and Founder, Exabytes Network

Engaging Our Community

To accomplish PSC’s objectives, we need to create a thriving ecosystem where all walks of life in our community understand the importance of science and technology and supportive of our efforts.

This may range from getting parents involved in learning with their children in learning science and encouraging them in the pursuit of science careers, volunteers helping to mentor students, philanthropist providing sponsorships to companies and individuals helping to mentor entrepreneurs.

Led by Mdm Shidah Ahmad, General Manager, Keysight Technologies Malaysia.

Tech-Dome Penang

Led by our sister company, Penang Tech Centre Bhd, the objective is to establish a visitor center to showcase and inspire passion for science and technology, by leveraging on Penang’s rich history of inventions and innovations from the 40 years of industrialization in the high-tech electronics sector.

A key feature of this center will be the experiential learning center that is made real by actual products, produced by the local companies.

Led by Dato’ SH Wong, Chairman, Malaysian American Electronics Industry.

Our Main Initiatives

PSC is a non-profit organization with a mission to spark interest in science and technology, create a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among our young in Penang and Malaysia.

TechMentor Program for Schools

In this program, sponsored Primary and Secondary schools will be provided a mentor over 6 months, and the loan of hardware and software for the students as they go through a hands-on, inquiry based course curriculum culminating in a project.

PSC recruits volunteer engineers from industries, parents and undergraduates to be trained as mentors. Mentors will then go to schools to mentor students over a multi month period in science and technology programs.

In 2014, PSC is sponsoring 50 schools in Lego Robotics program and 18 schools in Embedded System program. All PSC programs are free-of-charge to schools and students.

Penang International Science Fair (PISF)

A premier science and technology exhibition held annually.

Many events happen during PISF:

  • Industry and organisations will display their products and explain the science and technology behind the products and processes in an engaging manner with many games and door gifts.
  • Free hands-on, fun science workshops for students. Thousands of workshop slots are offered, but all are quickly snapped up.
  • Exciting robotics and other competitions.
  • Many other special events held in conjunction with PISF.
Penang Science Cafes

Science Cafes are in essence, local science community centers where members of public are welcome to come and use the facilities available.

Penang Science Cluster plan to open many Science Cafes in different locations in Penang to serve the local communities.

Activities in our Science Cafes include:
